2022 World Slasher Cup 1 officially crowns new champ

After six-days of exhilarating cockfights featuring some of the biggest names at the World Slasher Cup (WSC) 2022, one competitor ruled above them all as TJ Marquez of Texas Cockpit Arena brought home the title of World Slasher Cup champion.

Marquez has formally received his WSC trophy last April 6, 2022 at the Novotel Manila Araneta City after his phenomenal run at the cockfight matches held from March 21 to 27 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

“This is a dream come true for me. My victory here is really a huge blessing. I was given an avenue to promote traditional sabong. Thank you to the Araneta Coliseum management,” Marquez said after receiving his trophy.

Binibining Pilipinas Grand International 2021 Samantha Panlilio and Miss Globe 2021 Maureen Montagne also joined the awarding ceremony.

The newest WSC champion secured a win-loss record of 8-1 after fielding an impressive roster of bloodlines such as Oakgrove, Roundhead, and other bloodlines with oriental infusion, earning him the distinct honor of being the sole WSC Champion.

“TJ Marquez’ performance at the World Slasher Cup was nothing short of outstanding. He proved his dominance and skill and he earned the Championship title because of it. We congratulate him for this feat and we are confident that he will continue to gain more renown in the coming months and years,” Dong Lamoste, WSC Derby Office head and Smart Araneta Coliseum's pit manager, said.

Meanwhile, the deciding championship match was between Patrick Antonio's Sagupaan Complexor 3000/TERVIVAC and Gary Tubianosa and Jay Soria's Sta. Maria and it ended in a draw. They were named runners-up of the competition with 7.5 points each. Papa Bravo also concluded the WSC earning 7.5 points. Dennis Lumpay and Pablito Gregor, on the other hand, came home with 7 points.

Iking Araneta and Boyet Joson scored 6.5 points, and Eddieboy Cheng, Jun Topacio, Padz Barr, Johnny Moorer and John Seiner, Nene Araneta, and RQP all had 6 points each.

“We are incredibly proud of all who took part in the latest iteration of the World Slasher Cup. This event is a testament to the resilience of the Filipino cockfighting community. Even after all the challenges brought by the pandemic, they continued to work together to bring back the glory and prestige of cockfighting by joining the World Slasher Cup,” Lamoste said.

First held at the Big Dome in 1963, the WSC has become the premier cockfighting event in the country, attracting the best breeders and cockers not only within the Philippines but also from around the world each year. This has eventually led to the event being regarded as the "Olympics of Cockfighting" internationally.

The second leg of the 2022 World Slasher Cup will take place from May 26 to June 1 at the Big Dome.
